Kiss Me Goodbye by Emily Bold

Kiss Me Goodbye: A Romance Novel by Emily Bold

No tears today, she had asked. And up until this moment they had all managed to allow only positive thoughts. But the longer the night went on, the clearer it became to Lauren that everything they wanted to say needed to be said right now.

Excerpt:

The bonfire in front of the house was blazing high into the night sky. It was late, yet still too early to end the evening. This was an evening that no one wanted to end . . . The children had pulled the last of the marshmallows from their sticks, and their mouths were glistening with gooey sugar. Happy and with a full belly, four-year-old Alyssa was snuggled into her mother’s arms, her tired eyes closed. Her blonde curls framed a tender face, and Lauren felt as if she had never before witnessed anything so peaceful. Even thirteen-year-old Mia was tired. Lauren knew only too well that she had not been able to catch much sleep these past few nights. And she wasn’t the only one. When Lauren glanced around, she looked into many tired faces. Familiar faces – beloved faces. Her family and best friends had gathered here tonight to be happy and together one last time. To celebrate life and the gift of time that they had been given. But they had also gathered to say goodbye. A goodbye that none of them wanted – but one that was, after all, of her own choosing. A goodbye that felt right and reassuring but that was painful nonetheless.

‘You have no idea how much it means to me to be spending this night here at the lake house with all of you. It’s my favorite place in the entire world – the place I have chosen, and it makes me happy to have all of you around me one last time. You are the lifeblood of this house – my lifeblood.’

Lauren couldn’t help but smirk at her choice of words. Ordinarily, she wasn’t one for waxing poetic, but in this moment even the simplest of facts seemed to somehow exit her mouth wrapped in only weighty phrases.

‘Truth be told you are the best thing about me!’ she laughed and made a point of looking into every single face. They all returned her gaze, smiling – the way she had wanted. Somewhere between her best friend Rachel and her husband Tim she closed her eyes to fight down the tears she had expressively denied herself from having.

No tears today, she had asked. And up until this moment they had all managed to allow only positive thoughts. But the longer the night went on, the clearer it became to Lauren that everything they wanted to say needed to be said right now. Tim must have noticed the change in her mood from her voice, because he got up from his spot by the fire and walked over to her. Sitting down behind her on the bench, he wrapped his arms around her and Alyssa.

‘I love you,’ he whispered – but this was no secret. Lauren leaned against him. What a lovely moment this was!

‘There are moments in life that change everything all at once. Moments that pull the ground from under you and destroy everything you hold important,’ she mused, and her eyes rested on the twitching flames of the bonfire. ‘But there are also moments that seem completely inconspicuous at first glance, and yet they turn out to be the most important moments of your life.’ She gave Tim a smile. ‘We had such moments, Tim and I. Good, bad – a little bit of everything. And even if I always thought we would treasure them for the little treasures that they are, they’re now slipping away.’

She sounded defeated and grasped Tim’s hands, looking for comfort.
‘And yet . . . There is so much left that we cling to, because letting go would mean we have reached the end of the line. Do you remember how Tim and my story started? Fourteen years ago . . .?’ she looked around and pressed a gentle kiss on her husband’s chin. ‘Because that was that kind of moment.’

Transition Offense Against Any Defense by DEJAN ILIC

Transition Offense Against Any Defense: A Comprehensive Guide For Basketball Coaches (Basketball Coaching Books) by DEJAN ILIC

This book’s system gives coaches answers for every kind of defense. It covers playing against a man-to-man defense in the three most popular pick-and-roll spacings, clear-side pick, side pick, and top pick. Depending on the pick-and-roll defense being employed, there are numerous possibilities for each spacing.

The changes that must be made when playing against a zone defense or a full-court press are also covered in the book. No matter the defense, there is a counter-move for every possible circumstance.

The book also discusses a variety of alternative entries and instructs coaches on how to be innovative, put their own ideas into practice, and integrate them into the system.

The best part is that everything is described in a straightforward, logical order, progressing step-by-step from fundamental 3v0 drills to the overall picture.

IMPLOSION by Carolyn V. Hamilton

IMPLOSION: The search is on for six million dollars hidden in a Las Vegas hotel destined for destruction! by Carolyn V. Hamilton

Excerpt From Book:

Today is the day the end will begin, he thought as he drove his Lexus south on the Las Vegas Strip that early June morning.

Wearing his usual attire of Armani black silk suit, white shirt and white tie, he felt ready. He had only one agenda left to complete, but he was less confident of its outcome.
By the time “Crazy” Foxy Craig, owner of Las Vegas’ vintage Desert Palace Hotel & Casino, arrived at his executive office suite on the nineteenth floor, the outside temperature had risen to ninety-five degrees.

Inside the office Foxy saw to it that his secretary, Juniper Jachowski, kept the rooms at a cool sixty-six degrees. Foxy believed that cold temperatures kept everyone awake and on edge enough to want to state their business and leave as soon as possible. Foxy hated long meetings that began with a discussion of weekend golf scores.

“Junie, get Goodman and Cusamano in here.” The men were the Desert Palace’s top two executives, answering directly to Foxy Craig.

“Right away. You want coffee?” Juniper gestured towards the mini-kitchen. “Le Reve French roast this morning.”

“Yeah, sure. And add a shot of Black Jack while you’re at it. I’m going to need it for this meeting.”

One of Juniper Jachowski’s manicured eyebrows rose, but she didn’t ask for further explanation.

“And did you feed the jellyfish?” Foxy Craig’s newest office decoration was his jellyfish aquarium. Two lifelike artificial jellyfish floated in maintenance-free water illuminated by eighteen LEDs that changed color for different moods. A little silent pump created an undulating current that jiggled the jellyfish.

Foxy laughed. “Just a joke, Junie.”

After his secretary brought his coffee, Foxy closed the door to his office. What he had to announce had been fourteen months in planning and negotiation, during which he’d often felt frustrated by both the buyers and the bankers.

Now the reality would begin.
Juniper announced the arrival of the two men Foxy had summoned.
Al Goodman was Foxy’s Chief of Security, a chunky man with a receding hairline and a prominent mole on top of his left ear. John Cusamano was his always-exquisitely-tailored Hotel/Casino Manager.

Foxy gestured to two square-shaped, overstuffed chairs on one side of a glass coffee table. Goodman and Cusamano sat, Juniper served them coffee, left the room, and closed the door.

Al Goodman’s hefty body shivered in the big chair. “Foxy, it’s cold in here.”
Foxy Craig wondered how his Chief of Security could be cold with all that fat on his bones. Al must know every good buffet in town.
“I’ve sold the hotel,” he announced.

Cusamano blinked. “The Desert Palace?”

“Of course the Desert Palace. What other hotel would I be talking about?”

Goodman shifted in his chair. “Wow.”
“Now I know a lot of people will be surprised, which is why I wanted you to be the first to know. We’ll need to work closely together to coordinate everything that’ll need to be done in the next few months.”

“Who’s the new buyer?” Goodman asked.

“HXS World, Incorporated.”

“They don’t run casinos. They build condos.”

“That’s close,” Foxy said. “The Desert Palace will be imploded so they can build a mega-penthouse, mixed-use urban development that’ll include restaurants and high-end shops.”
“Imploded?” Cusamano said.

Foxy nodded. “As you know, we’ve struggled in recent years. Our casino and our rooms are relatively small now compared to the fancy new competition down the street. Our accountants say it would be too costly to do another expensive remodel, and my wife is pressing me to retire.”

Cusamano mumbled, “Mary Ann retired when she married you.”

Foxy ignored the comment and said, “Times have changed. The Desert Palace is dated and can’t possibly make any more money. It’s only going to cost money to maintain.”

Goodman frowned. “This is crazy.” When he saw Foxy’s face harden, he remembered that his boss took personal offense to any comment that included the word, crazy. It was why everyone called him “Crazy Foxy” only behind his back, never in his presence. “So when?” he asked.

“Unless something unforeseen happens, we anticipate a closing date of October twenty-eighth, with the implosion scheduled for the twelfth of November.”
Goodman whistled. “Less than six months.”

“Imploded,” Cusamano repeated, as if he were trying to tailor the idea, like he did his suits, around his personal lifestyle.

Whispers in the Dark by Kris Bock

Whispers in the Dark: A Small Town Romantic Suspense in the Southwest by Kris Bock

A young archaeologist seeking peace after an assault stumbles into danger as mysteries unfold among ancient Southwest ruins. Can she overcome the fears from her past, learn to fight back, and open herself to a new romance?

Excerpt:

I hit something, bounced, scraped, and finally landed with a thud that rattled my whole body.

I lay in the dark, blinded, my head ringing, pain washing over me in great waves. My lungs screamed for air, but it seemed like I’d forgotten how to breathe.

Finally I dragged in a breath. I closed my eyes and focused on breathing, waiting for the world to settle into place.

Rain misted my face, so I must be lying on my back. My head felt heavier than my feet. I shifted and realized I was lying on a slope with my head pointing down.

I tried to concentrate on those little details. I couldn’t handle anything more. Panic fluttered around me, but I refused to think about anything but the present moment. I flexed my fingers. When that worked, I moved my hands over my body, up to my face. My head throbbed, but when I felt around my skull, I didn’t find any serious damage.

I had to move. The thought battered at the back of my mind, a panicky whisper that I tried to ignore. I had to run. Hide. He was after me. I had to get away.

I clenched my teeth hard, as if I could bite back the pain and fear. Memories crowded in, like panicked ghosts wailing at the edges of my mind. Guns, strange men. Dangerous, threatening men. Danesh trying to protect me, the gun going off. My own helpless, panicked flight. Helpless. Worthless. Unable to fight, unable even to scream.

I tried to focus on this one moment, the physical sensations of my aching body as I lay on the hard, damp ground. The cold against my bare calves, the lump of rock pressing into my shoulder. That focus helped keep me grounded in the present. Never mind that this present wasn’t a place I wanted to be. I had to deal with reality. But I didn’t have to also deal with nightmares. Not now.

The little whimpers in my throat faded to short gasping breaths. I held on to this moment, this single slice of reality. Now to move forward. I didn’t have to like it, but I had to do it. One step at a time.
