If you’ve never lived with ME/CFS, the logic of “push through it” probably still makes a kind of sense to you, because it’s built on an assumption almost everyone shares: that cause and effect are close together. You overdo it, you feel tired, you rest, you recover. Do a bit more each week, and your body adapts. That’s how exertion works for most people, most of the time.
It’s also, almost exactly, the opposite of how it works in ME/CFS — and understanding why is the difference between seeing pacing as giving up, and seeing it for what it actually is: the only response that fits the biology.
