The singer’s voice was slightly off-key; a poor rendition of Roxanne echoed through the club. Connor looked into his scotch and swirled it around. Single malt, definitely a luxury he couldn’t afford.

Connor had been out of jail for two months now. He’d been locked up for two years on a trumped-up narcotics charge. Not that he wasn’t a criminal. No, he couldn’t say that in all good conscience. He just wasn’t that type of criminal. He thieved for a living. He’d tried going straight, working minimum wage jobs, packing shelves at the local supermarket for six bucks an hour.
