The Clarity Edge: What Deserves Your Attention in a World of Too Much by Charlie Stephen

Before your feet touch the floor in the morning, the world may already be waiting for you.

There are emails that arrived overnight. Text messages you haven’t answered. News alerts explaining what happened while you were asleep.

You pick up your phone to check the weather.

Ten minutes later, you’ve learned about a political controversy, watched part of a video someone sent you, glanced at three headlines, noticed an email marked urgent, and discovered that a celebrity you’ve never met is getting divorced.

You still don’t know whether it’s going to rain.
This is such an ordinary experience that we barely notice how strange it is.

Within minutes of waking, we can expose our minds to more voices, events, opinions, advertisements, and ideas than previous generations could have encountered in days.

And much of it isn’t worthless.

The article may contain an important idea. The podcast may teach us something. The email may deserve a response. The news may affect us. The opportunity may be worth considering.
That’s what makes the problem difficult.
We naturally assume that if useful information is good, more useful information should be better.

For most of history, that assumption made sense. Knowledge was difficult to obtain. Books were scarce. Expertise was difficult to access. Answers often required considerable effort to find.
Information had friction.

We have spent centuries removing it.

Today, a device small enough to fit in your pocket provides access to libraries, universities, experts, markets, scientific research, historical archives, and much of humanity’s accumulated knowledge.

AI can now summarize, compare, organize, and generate even more of it almost instantly.
But something unexpected happened.

The easier information became to acquire, the harder it became to determine what deserved our attention.

Yet many of us still behave as though the problem is scarcity.
