Was he willing to sacrifice all of that?Peering out his window, he observed a shaded horizon with intermittent tinges of blue peeking through gray cumulus clouds. Apparently, even the meteorological gods were having problems making decisions today as they considered whether to grace the area with fair or foul weather.
In the final analysis, he justified his decision by framing it as an act of altruism rather than self-interest. If his genetic work was squelched, no one would benefit. He couldn’t let that happen. Furthermore, he convinced himself that the risk was minimal to any subject receiving CAP-715. Phase I trials recruit healthy volunteers who are closely ob- served by medical personnel. Nothing terrible was going to happen under those carefully monitored conditions. Against his better judgment and core beliefs, he decided it was best to follow the path of least resistance and abide by Davis’s directive.
