Every morning now I take a walk in the woods, before the others wake and start complaining. It’s been eleven days since we’ve heard anything other than birds and bugs and the small waves lapping on the shore of the lake.
Eleven days ago, we were all just passengers on a flight from LA to New York. Half the people were asleep when I first noticed something was amiss. The flight attendant was crying, running down the aisle. Just as I was opening my phone to check whether there had been some update on the war, the captain came on and told us we had to make an emergency landing. The war had escalated, and bombs were being lobbed across the Pacific in both directions. We had to get out of the air immediately.
The pilots were forced to land on a lake in North Dakota. The landing was rough, but they managed to skim across the lake and come to a jarring halt on a sandy bank. We all clapped.
Since then, we’ve been trying to ration our food, hoping someone will come for us, but I’m unconvinced. If bombs were dropped on American cities, who would care about a group so small, and one who didn’t need to be evacuated to avoid radiation poisoning?
