The everyday nuisance of the unknown disturbance call is an accepted fact of the police officer’s daily life. As often as not, these calls turn out to be totally insubstantial: nothing at the scene, no witnesses, no evidence, just another ripple in the fabric of the shift, unremarked and soon forgotten. Cops are used to arriving on scene after the fact. Occasionally, the responding officer is called upon to referee a fistfight or intercede in a domestic squabble or minor neighborhood dispute, chase a raccoon away from the trash cans, or counsel a rebellious kid, but rarely does the unknown disturbance call result in anything serious.
