Promotion and Marketing Tips

Promotion and marketing strategiesIf you’re like most Indie-authors, you’re confused by the marketing and promotion process necessary to get your book in front of the millions of people visiting Amazon every day.  Do you need help writing your book’s description? Are you trying to determine which categories you should use? Do you understand the process to determine the best keywords to use?

Sell More Books will clarify the promotion and marketing process used by all the successful authors.

Here is some of the information you’ll find inside:

Writing Powerful Descriptions

Start with the strapline or the hook for the story. Imagine you’re talking to someone who asks you, “So, what’s your book about?” Give them the important information. Tell them how the book will make them feel instead of telling them what it’s about. Make it exciting. Don’t say, “It’s about a guy living on the streets of downtown Denver in the middle of the winter.” Instead say, “Imagine you’re homeless, in the middle of a bone-chilling winter. Hungry and broke, not knowing where your next meal is coming from. What would you do?” Get to the real meat of the story, right away. Don’t be afraid to be original, this may be your only chance to get someone interested in your story. There are literally thousands they can choose from. Let them know why they should spend the time and money on yours.

Choosing Categories

Categories on Amazon are confusing, to say the least. But understanding them and placing your book in the correct one is essential. Imagine Amazon as a gigantic bookstore with over two million books. Walking in the front door, you head for the section, or category, that interests you.

Navigate through the Amazon departments to find a category that’s suitable for your book, but not very competitive. Amazon allows you to pick two categories. Let’s pick our first category:

Kindle Store › Kindle eBooks › Literature & Fiction › Action & Adventure › Mystery, Thriller & Suspense › Crime

If you use Amazon’s “Browse /Categories” function, you’ll be able to see how many books are in a category. Currently, there are over 600,000 books in the Literature & Fiction section. We don’t want to have to compete with all of them! In Action & Adventure, there are only 76,000. That’s better, but it’s still a lot. If we drill down one more layer, we see there are only 17,000 eBooks in the Mystery, Thriller & Suspense category. That’s more like it!

Finding Competitive Keywords

The next thing we’ll work on is your keywords. These are search terms your potential buyers use when looking for a book. Amazon keeps its actual algorithm secret but it says that your book’s title and description is already used as search terms so you shouldn’t repeat them. If you’re still writing your book and haven’t determined a title yet, you might consider doing some keyword research first and adding the result in your title.

You’re allowed to use seven keywords or keyword strings for your book. To determine what buyers are searching for, you can use Amazon’s database.

You might not realize that much like Google, Amazon has a fantastic keyword tool.  You may have typed in a keyword in the Google search bar and seen suggestions come up. Amazon has the same function. Go to the search bar on the Amazon site, navigate to the “Kindle Store,” from the dropdown arrow, and then start typing something. Let’s say your book is about a man whose wife is murdered. If you type in “murder,” Amazon’s look-ahead feature gives you its first suggestion, “Murder Mystery.”

Amazon Author Page

The Author Page is your chance to tell readers something interesting about yourself, so make sure you include any details about your background, awards you have won, and other books you have written. You should include any personal details customers might want to know. Think about which blog posts or “tweets” you’ve written which have gotten the most interest. This is who you are; share your information with your readers.

Your author photo doesn’t need to be professionally created, but should be a high-resolution image for quality display. I suggest having a good head shot of yourself and using it on all of your social media accounts. After seeing the picture on the internet, people will eventually recognize you and instinctively trust you. You can add up to eight images, and choose the order in which they appear.

Receiving Reviews

Having friends and relatives review your book may seem like a good idea at first, but in the end, it isn’t worth the trouble. Either they won’t do it or the review they leave sounds fake or paid for. So, how do you get reviews? I’m glad you asked. Here are a few ideas that have worked for me including links to Facebook groups dedicated to review swaps, author/reader groups to join, and information about a search engine that searches for professional book reviews.

Soldier of Fortune: A Gideon Quinn Adventure: Book One of The Fortune Chronicles by Kathleen McClure

Kathleen McClureOn the planet Fortune, tech is low, tensions high and heroes… unlikely.

Wrongly convicted of treason, Gideon Quinn spent six years harvesting crystal under the killing suns of the Morton Barrens. When a general of the Corps arrives with an offer of freedom and the chance to clear his name, Gideon doesn’t have to think twice. With his pet draco Elvis on his shoulder, Gideon takes ‘ship for Nike City on a quest for justice (or, failing that, revenge). What he finds is a dodger named Mia, a city steeped in corruption, and a menace at the heart of the Corps which could bring Fortune’s new and fragile peace to an explosive end.

And that’s just his first night in town.

About the author, Kathleen McClure:

Kathleen McClureFormer actor and fight choreographer (and constant 14 year old), Kathleen has always been fiercely engaged by rip-roaring, escapist adventures.

That said, it’s no surprise she launched her novel-writing career with The Fortune Chronicles, an ode to the adventures she’s been devouring since the age of four, when her mother took her to see Romeo and Juliet (Zeffirelli’s version) and watched Mercutio, Tybalt and Romeo clashing swords.

Every so often, Kathleen has company in writing the planet Fortune, as can be seen in Outrageous Fortune, where she’s joined by co-author Kelley McKinnon.

And outside the Fortune Chronicles, Kathleen is venturing into deeper, darker territory in The Zodiac Files, (a series she gleefully nicknamed “Spies! In Space!”) with fellow author L. Gene Brown.

Kathleen McClure has short stories published in Timeless Tales Magazine, Lorelei Signals and, with K. Ceres Wright, contributed to Diner Stories: Off the Menu, an anthology celebrating the American Diner. Of course Ceres and Kathleen put their diner in space because the only thing more interesting than Spies! In Space! are Milkshakes! In Space! (Kathleen was often hungry while writing The Last Stop).

She currently lives in Austin, TX with her patient and endlessly supportive husband, two consistently entertaining teens and three cats who take turns getting in the way of the keyboard.

Ken Montrose’s Suspense Thriller is Free Today!

Ken MontroseTwo very different narrators voice the novella Dancing with Rachel. Voices torment the first narrator, David an ex-football player just trying to make a life for himself. He calls his auditory hallucinations “The Chorus.” They have names and even personalities. While naïve staff members claim the voices aren’t real, David knows otherwise. He can hear The Chorus clearly. He can point to where they are coming from. How could they not be real?

Taylor, the other narrator and David’s therapist, struggles to stay sober and fight off depression while his wife lies in a coma. He bounces between his job at St. Joe’s, a psychiatric hospital, and the adjoining Lazard Memorial Hospital’s Extended Care Unit. Taylor spends much of his time traveling the cold, antiseptic tunnel between the two hospitals, always seeing the light at the end, but knowing he’s far underground.

Their lives intersect on an inpatient psychiatric unit run by Dr. Rainey, the medical equivalent of an absentee landlord. While at the State Hospital, David meets a patient who knew Doc Rainey when he was an intern struggling with his own boundary issues.

‘Regulars’ on this unit include Tom, a rapist and master manipulator, whose benign appearance hides true evil. (David describes him a cross between Fred Rogers and a serial killer.)

A patient named Simon wants nothing more than to find peace with God. His size and religious fervor make him the perfect cat’s paw for Tom. This scares David’s ex-girlfriend and fellow patient Monica, as well as their friend Kai. The one patient not afraid of Tom or Simon is Marc, an entrepreneurial genius suffering from bipolar disorder.

As Taylor worries about David, Taylor’s friends worry about him. They watch his spirits and his weight drop as he wrestles with his own demons. An insurance company balking at the cost of a new respirator for his wife doesn’t help.

Life outside the hospital can be chaotic, especially within Kai’s family. His father, a born middle manager nicknamed BiMM, declares bankruptcy, accuses his mother of killing his father, and refuses to believe his wife had an affair. Kai has no doubt his grandmother tampered with the garage door lock, trapping Kai’s grandfather inside. He’s not at all upset when they find the old racist asphyxiated, but he wonders if he’s the only sane person in his family.

About the author, Ken Montrose:

Ken MontroseBlind cat
I did a lot of personal research into the life of an alcoholic. The last time I had a drink I made an illegal left turn at 3:00 a.m., hitting a county sheriff. I was $35K in debt. I had just gotten kicked out of my Ph.D. program. My divorce was a month from being final. I lived in an apartment with no furniture. My cat was blind.

When Even the Voices are Hungover
I learned about mental illness by spending ten years helping people with schizophrenia overcome addiction. We’d talk about why partying with the voices was a bad idea, or the importance of not mixing Prolixin with crack. I was humbled by folks who stayed sober despite delusions, paranoia, hospitalizations, and horrible medication side effects.

Write now?
I started writing when I was in my early thirties. I wrote Dancing With Rachel in 1995, got a literary agent, and became an expert on rejection letters. Greenbriar Treatment Center asked me to write the workbooks we gave to patients. We began selling them online and at conferences, where they were very well received.

Lucky me
I have a wife and two children. They amaze me everyday. I work at a rehab. The people there amaze me as well. Much of what I write is inspired by their struggles. I am working on AArdvarks another daily meditation book for recovering addicts, a series of short stories, and a novella about the clash between a shadow government, the real government, and people forced to take sides.

But will she?

About the author, Jacob Whaler:

Jacob WhalerI remember reading Ray Bradbury’s horror stories as a teenager into the dark hours of the night, afraid to move for fear that I’d stir up something evil. I consumed Alan Dean Foster’s Alien in one sitting, glued to the La-Z-Boy recliner in our family room, heart beating in unison with the characters on the page as they pursued, and were pursued by, the nightmare aboard their starship. I sat in a secret corner of our house with tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat as I savored the end of The Lord of the Rings and Watership Down.

I have experienced the power of words in my own life, and my belief in that power to fire our imaginations and lift our minds to new heights pushes me to write.

My favorite places are near oceans or mountains. I love to spend time in Japan exploring its unique culture, history and language.

As a six-year-old on a fishing trip with my dad and grandpa, I found an obsidian rock half buried in the mud, blunt on one end and pointed on the other, about the size of an adult fist. My grandpa, a lifelong rock hound, tried in vain to get it away from me. He begged, threatened and offered me money. He told me what a perfect addition it would make to his collection. But I refused to let it part from my fingers.

For some reason, I felt an immediate bond to that rock.

I took it home, washed it off and put it on the window ledge above my bed. (There’s a photo of it on my website.)

Decades later, I still keep that rock close by and often pick it up to feel the way it naturally fits the curve of my palm. I like to stare into its glassy surface and daydream about where it came from and the secrets it might hold.

It was on such a day, as I looked into my Stone, the seed of an idea took shape in my mind. Little by little, that idea grew and sprouted tentacles until it got such a hold on my brain that I was left with no choice but to start writing it down.

The result was four long books that became the STONES series of novels.

In a way, I think of the STONES novels as keeping a promise to my six-year-old self, a promise to always keep room in my heart for child-like wonder. A promise to stay who I am.

In my professional life, I’ve used words to build meaning into arcane corporate documents that control the flow of hundreds of millions of dollars around the globe. But I’ve grown tired of using words to control something as mundane as money.

So I’ve become a writer of novels.

Back in high school, I learned to program computers. It’s a different kind of writing, a different kind of language, a different kind of control. But like any good writing, it’s a string of written instructions that has an effect on the real world.

I’d like to think that the words of my novels are like computer code for human brains.

I hope you will plug in and enjoy.
