The bar was sticky. The bar mat stuck to the bar, the coaster stuck to the bar mat, and Connor’s feet stuck to the floor. A symphony of stickiness to complement the music pumping in the background. The singer’s voice was slightly off-key; a poor rendition of Roxanne echoed through the club. Connor looked into his scotch and swirled it around. Single malt, definitely a luxury he couldn’t afford.
Connor had been out of jail for two months now. He’d been locked up for two years on a trumped-up narcotics charge. Not that he wasn’t a criminal. No, he couldn’t say that in all good conscience. He just wasn’t that type of criminal. He thieved for a living. He’d tried going straight, working minimum wage jobs, packing shelves at the local supermarket for six bucks an hour. He couldn’t afford to feed his pet bird on that. Then, the offer came in. A thousand dollars for one meeting. The job wasn’t likely to be legitimate…
