There I was standing motionless at the top of a Soviet era submarine entrance which had long since been decommissioned and no longer housed submarines in its crystal-clear waters. Instead of submarines stealthily moving below the surface the area was dotted with yachts and sailing boats carrying throngs of tourists who would scramble up the side of the entrance to leap from the top or in some cases to crawl back down the rocky terrain.

Seconds before I had been clinging to the dirt and rock with my bare hands and feet before finally cresting the hill and breathing a quick sigh of relief. I turned around to begin edging my way along the narrow cement ledge which jutted from the hillside and was suspended across the clear blue of the water below me. I watched as more people crawled their way up the steep incline and as I slowly inched along the edge the person ahead of me jumped. Distant cheers from those below me told me that he had surfaced triumphant and unscathed.

I hesitated; in that moment I was faced with two choices. I could go back the way I had come up or I could leap. My decision in those next few seconds was a defining moment in my mindset journey. It was one where I took a risk, where I felt fear and took action anyway. It was another step in my journey to building a “growth mindset”.
