Born on Long Island, but moved to South Florida when he was eight. John spent four years in the military after high school. Began college at Palm Beach Junior College before transferring to Florida State University in his junior year. Received B.A. and M.A, degrees in English before teaching high school for one year. Returned to FSU and finished a Ph.D. Hired by the University of Georgia, where he taught for thirty-one years. John Vance published six books and forty articles and reviews on literary criticism and biography.
